412. BLAVATSKY, H. P.: The Key to Theosophy, Being a Clear, in the Form of Question and Answer, of the Ethics, Science, and Philosophy for the Study of Which the Theosophical Society has Been Founded. London: The Theosophical Publishing Company. Limited, 1889. FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION. Quarto (17.5 x 21.5 cm) pp. xii, 310, i - xiv ads. Publisher's blue cloth, double blind rule to top and bottom, with title in facsimile manuscript and Theosophical symbols in gilt to upper and gilt titles to spine. All edges trimmed with coated brown endpapers. Some soiling to boards and rubbing to edges with a small hole to the lower part of the spine. Paper over the hinges slightly split in places, but book remains well bound. Some spotting to fore-edge and old water stains to top-edge, but these do not show on the pages, which apart from some foxing on the half-title are remarkably clean and free from writing or other marks. Written neatly in ink to the top of the title page is: 'You are requested to lend this | book to your friends by the Donor'. Blavatsky's last major book published in her lifetime, followed only by the short work 'The Voice of the Silence'. Written in a question and answer format the 'Theosophist' explans to the 'Enquirer' every aspect of Theosophy and the Theosophical Society in 14 sections covering the history of the Society, it's fundamental beliefs, deeper philosophies, practical Theosopy and what the Society is and isn't. Considering the massive amount of works published by the Theosophical Society and the endless reprints and facsimiles, these original Blavatsky first editions are surprisingly uncommon. A good plus copy only, but rarely seen
